Heath Equity: What You Can Do

Mar 15, 2019

Dismantling structural racism and other systemic inequities that contribute to health disparities will take a concerted effort and long-term commitment at the individual, organizational and systemic levels. It’s a challenge so great and so important that many are left asking ‘What can I do?’

This new post on the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ) blog shares what those of us in healthcare can do — as individuals and within our organizations — to take steps toward achieving health equity.  The team at NICHQ breaks these first steps down into three key components:

  1. Recognize our own implicit biases
  2. Develop our own health equity definitions
  3. Work within our organizations to develop org-wide health equity definitions

As NICHQ Chief Health Officer, Elizabeth Coté, MD, MPA notes:

“Health equity is big, overwhelming and deeply personal. Tackling it takes time and trust; it requires deep, internal inquiry from every one of us, so we can take discreet steps as individuals and then as organizations to pursue change. To achieve health equity, we must begin with ourselves — start right where we are.”
